Veolia Achieves Gold in 2024 Environmental Benchmarking Survey

Veolia was named as one of Northern Ireland's most environmentally conscious organisations at the announcement of the 2024 Northern Ireland Environmental Benchmarking Survey results. The event, organised by Business in the Community Northern Ireland (BITCNI), showcased the region's leaders in sustainability practices.

This year we have achieved Gold Level, having achieved Silver Level recognition in 2023. This improvement demonstrates our continued commitment to environmental excellence and sustainable practices.

The Survey, a voluntary self-disclosure exercise, provides organisations with an opportunity to have their environmental efforts and performance externally assessed and scored. Participants receive a detailed Gap Analysis Report, highlighting areas of strength and identifying opportunities for further improvement. The Survey goes beyond merely checking compliance with legal environmental requirements. It recognises and rewards organisations that are taking proactive steps to enhance their environmental performance.

The 2024 Survey saw participation from over 130 organisations across various sectors, including General Manufacturing, Local Authorities, Education, Utilities, Construction, ICT, and Food and Drink.

We can see that businesses in NI recognise that an increase in the likelihood of extreme weather events due to climate change poses significant challenges to operations, supply chains, and long-term financial stability.

Biodiversity is being considered too, with 65% of businesses reporting that they have taken action to improve their impacts by making biodiversity a fundamental element in their ESG strategy. They’re making a difference along the value chain too, by engaging with sub-contractors, the local community, and schools, to clean up local green areas, provide bird boxes, planters, soil and wildflower seeds.
