Combining engineering excellence with patented Veolia technologies to provide a sustainable sludge treatment solution
Following on from the successful upgrade of the co-located wastewater treatment plant at Osberstown, Co. Kildare, Veolia was asked to upgrade the Sludge Treatment facility to provide a solution for all sludge in Co. Kildare.
The challenge
Veolia was asked to reduce the operating costs, energy consumption and carbon emissions of the Sludge Treatment facility while providing a solution that would sustainably treat all sludge generated in Co. Kildare.
The solution
Our groundbreaking approach to upgrading the Sludge Treatment Facility uses Advanced Anaerobic Digestion, or AAD.
AAD is an emerging sludge treatment technology that converts organic waste material within municipal sludge into valuable biogas, a renewable fuel.
Delivering AAD at Osberstown was made possible only by considered use of innovative new technologies - each individually designed to work on the site layout and with each other - while maximising the use of existing assets.
Value delivered
Veolia’s solution is saving 8,500 tonnes of CO2 annually, 35 GWh of energy consumption and circa €2m annually in operational costs.
