Major distillery

Full water cycle management as production increased

Meeting the water demands of a global distillery

To satisfy a growing global thirst for their products, this globally recognised distillery embarked on the largest expansion in the company’s history.

Upgrading the water and effluent treatment was vital to the expansion, something that Veolia took care of, from concept to completion.

The challenge

Veolia was asked to develop a solution that would meet the water demands of the planned distillery expansion. The key goals were to double the capacity for wastewater treatment, remove and treat 280 m3 of water per hour including softening, achieve excellent water quality standards and  cause minimum impact to live operational site.

The solution

Veolia took care of upgrading the water and effluent treatment from concept to completion.

Veolia provides tried and tested water solutions to ensure a reliable supply, guaranteeing 100% compliance and enabling business to continue without interruption.

Key elements of the solution implemented by Veolia included a new borehole that complements surface water extraction, Veolia’s patented Actiflo® system to clarify water and wastewater to highest standards with minimum carbon footprint, a BioSEP Membrane Reactor (MBR) wastewater treatment plant to increase capacity without interrupting production and additional balancing, equalisation and sludge dewatering facilities to maintain highest discharge standards.

Value delivered

Production capacity has doubled as a result of the increased water and wastewater capacity while the quality and cost per m3 exceeds expectations.

The water supply is of drinking water standard and wastewater complies with the site discharge licence regulations.
