Dagenham Plastics Recycling Facility

Closing the loop of the circular economy for HDPE milk bottles

A state of the art plastics recycling facility

In the UK, HDPE* plastic milk bottles are now part of the circular economy. Veolia’s recycling facility in Dagenham recycles plastic milk bottles into high quality food grade HDPE* pellets, providing high quality resources for the dairy industry.

The challenge

In October 2016, Veolia took over an unused plastic bottle recycling plant in Dagenham in East London. After some initial investment to get the facility up and running again, with the addition of improved technology, it is now turning waste bottles into a food-grade recycled nHDPE product that is used to make new milk bottles and yogurt pots.

The solution

At the edge between a sorting centre and a manufacturing plant, Dagenham Plastics is the key element to close the loop of nHDPE recycling. After a thorough sorting to guarantee 99% of food grade HDPE in the process, the flakes are melted and turned into pellets, ready to be used by the manufacturing industry.

Value delivered

Over 300 million milk bottles arrive at the Dagenham facility each year, that’s the equivalent to all the milk consumed in London every year. The facility produces 10,000 metric tons of food-grade HDPE pellets yearly which are used to make new milk bottles and yogurt pots.
